Plastic Surgery Associates of Lafayette performs a variety of Botox®
What is Botox®?
Botox® is a drug that is made from a toxin, which is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The FDA has approved the drug as a prescription product. Botox® has been used to treat frown lines separating the eyebrows, crow’s feet, and other facial creases, wrinkles and lines.
It can also be used for medical purposes, not just cosmetic purposes. Botox® is able to block signals coming from the nerves to the muscles, paralyzing them. The signal that would be sent is no longer received.
Once injected the muscle does not contract, which softens and relaxes the appearance of wrinkles. As a general rule of thumb, alcohol and aspirin should be avoided one-two weeks before the treatment.
How is Botox® Performed?
Botox® is diluted in saline and given in the form of an injection using a fine needle, with no anesthesia. Patients only feel minor discomfort while it is being applied. It is a simple office procedure that only takes a few minutes.
The Botox® injection is directly applied to specific muscles. The amount of injections needed can vary. Results can take three to seven days to show. Botox® effects last around 6 months and reapplication is needed. Eventually, the muscles are able to learn to relax.
