Darrell L. Henderson, MD uses facial implants on patients in Lafayette, LA who have weak facial contouring or have suffered a significant trauma to their face and want a more proportionate appearance with their facial structure.
Facial implants are used for cosmetic as well as reconstructive purposes. They can improve facial appearance by building up the chin and cheek areas, allowing them to become more defined and contoured.
What are Facial Implants?
Facial Implants are composed of varying types of natural and synthetic materials including plastic, rubber, silicone, sea coral, and bone. The implants are designed to simulate a natural bone structure and can give more definition to thin or recessed features, or angular shape to parts of the face like the jaw line.
Benefits of Facial Implants
- Improve appearance
- Achieve facial symmetry
- Restore look of youth and vitality
- Easily customizable
Patients can opt for a more natural, softer look or a more angular and chiseled appearance depending on personal preference.
Facial Implants Procedure
Patients undergoing facial implant surgery are first given a general anesthetic. The surgeon then proceeds to make a small incision through which the implant is placed. The location of the incision depends on the type of implants.
- For chin implants, the incision is typically made inside the mouth or under the chin.
- For cheek implants, the incisions are made inside the cheek or at the lower eyelid.
The surgical procedure typically lasts anywhere from one to two hours.
Preparing for Facial Implants
The most common post-surgical symptoms of facial implants are numbness, swelling, and bruising. You may also experience some discomfort. We recommend ice packs, over-the-counter pain medications and plenty of rest to help control these symptoms.
Facial Implant Recovery
Because the implants are placed in areas that move when you talk and eat, you will need to follow a soft diet for a few days. You should also limit your activities for the same period of time and plan to stay home from work for at least five days. Exercise and other intense activities are restricted for up to four weeks.*
*Take note individual results may vary
